Greggs Bacon and Cheese Wrap Copycat
Anyone who has visited a Greggs Bakery in the UK would probably have seen, smelt & tasted their Bacon and Cheese Wraps?!
This is where we got the idea to make this recipe from scratch, for those people who don’t have a Gregg’s nearby when you need a bacon and cheese fix!
The good news is YOU can make this meaty cheesy pastry snack easily at home!
Ingredients
Cheese and bacon turnovers only require four basic ingredients, puff pastry, bacon, cheese and egg.
Puff Pastry
We use a ready-rolled pastry sheet, which is quick and easy. You can buy pastry squares or cut them into squares yourself. Alternatively buy a block of puff pastry to roll your own.
Or if you have the time and patience, make your own rough puff pastry.
Roll your ready-rolled puff pastry flat onto parchment paper and cut into 6 equal(ish) squares.
Bacon
You can use streaky bacon or back bacon, smoked or unsmoked? The choice is yours! You can even buy ready-cooked crispy bacon rashers if you wanted to speed up the process.
First, you will need to cook your bacon off in a pan until cooked to your preference. We only cooked ours lightly but if you like it crispy you can make it crispy!
Or cook bacon in the air fryer. Remember they will cook longer in the oven too, so don’t overdo them.
Place the pre-cooked bacon diagonally across the pastry, and add a generous handful of cheddar over the top of the bacon.
Cheese
We use mild-medium cheddar for the kids and a mature cheese for the adults to give a richer taste!
Try either Cheddar, Monterey Jack, Havarti, Colby, Gruyere or Gouda. You could even do a combo of two kinds of cheeses.
For the best melting results, the cheese should be grated.
Add a generous handful of your chosen cheese over the top of the bacon
Now fold one corner over the cheese and then the other one over the top of that corner. Make sure to push pastry firmly together where they join to prevent the dreaded unfold in the oven!
Egg
This is used to wash over the pastry, which helps give a beautiful golden colour. You can use milk instead if wanted.
Brush over all the exposed pastry with egg wash to help them achieve a golden brown colour during cooking.
Cheese and Bacon Turnover cooking temperature and time
Lay onto a baking tray covered with parchment paper, leaving enough space between them for the pastry to puff a little.
Cook in a preheated oven at 190°C Fan / 210°C / 415 F/ Gas Mark 6 for 15-20 minutes, remove when they are golden brown and flaky!
Once cooked, remove from tray and place on a wire rack to prevent the pastry from forming a soggy bottom.
Cook in a preheated oven at 190°c for 15-20 minutes, remove when they are golden and flaky!
How to serve Cheese and Bacon Turnovers?
Best served straight from the baking sheet, whilst the cheese is still melted and stringy!
They can be served anytime for breakfast, brunch, lunch, after school snack, or dinner.
This recipe makes 6 big turnovers, if you wanted you could make 8 or 12 smaller ones for snack-size party food!
Our Flawless Cheese and Bacon Turnovers are the perfect treats for all occasions, everyone loves them!
