Cornflake cake ingredients
The only ingredients you need for these chocolate cornflake nests are cornflakes, butter, chocolate and golden syrup.
We like to use milk chocolate as it is the kids favourite but dark chocolate or even white chocolate can be used instead.
You don't have to use cooking chocolate for this recipe, you can use your favourite brand.
Microwave method
Melting chocolate in the microwave is the quickest method. Here are a few tips to melt the butter chocolate and golden syrup together in a microwavable bowl.
It is best to change the microwave settings to be 50% power to prevent the butter and chocolate from exploding, spluttering and worst of all burning!
All microwaves power varies so start with 30 seconds at 50% power, stir.
Then return to the microwave for 30-second intervals (still at 50% power) and stir, repeat until all melted together and smooth.
Pan Method
Of course, the good old fashioned way with a pan over the hob can be used instead.
Fill a saucepan ¼ full of water. Place a heatproof bowl on top of the pan it should fit in quite snug, so as not to allow the water to spill into the bowl.
Place saucepan over a low heat and add chocolate, golden syrup and butter into the bowl. Stir until all smooth and well combined.
Whichever method of melting you choose, once the chocolate mixture has melted, pour over the cornflakes and gently stir all the ingredients together until well coated.
Make sure to be gentle here, folding the mixture over and over enough times to coat with the delicious chocolatey mixture without crushing all the cornflakes.
Of course, if you are allowing the kids to make these chocolate cornflake cakes by themself, it won’t matter if they do get crushed! They will still be super tasty!
Cornflake Cupcake Cases
Transfer equal amounts of the chocolate-coated cornflakes into cupcake cases. You can find some lovely cases from The Cake Craft Shop.
You can finish here… or take it a step further by adding anything you like, such as mini marshmallows, smarties, M&M’s or raisins.
Our kids love to make chocolate cornflake nests by making a small hole in the middle to add mini eggs into, perfect at Easter time!
Give the bowl to the kids to lick out now, that should keep them quiet whilst the cornflake cakes are setting.
How to set
It is normal that your cornflake cakes are sloppy and soft at this point, the quickest way is to put in the fridge to set. They shouldn't take long to firm up.
If the kids can't wait and want to eat them straight away they can of course!
Storage
Once the cornflake cakes have been set they can be kept at room temperature in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
Serving Suggestions
Cornflake cakes are the perfect quick and easy recipe to make for school cake sales, they are always the first ones to be taken by the children!
It's also a great way to get kids involved in cooking as they'll have fun making these tasty treats with you to share with their friends.
Now let's be honest here, we are saying this chocolate cornflake recipe is for the kids, but even us adults love these rich, gooey chocolate-coated treats
Bonus is there is only one bowl and spoon to clean up after, unless the kids help you make them, then you will likely have sticky hands and chocolate faces to clean too!

Lesley
Absolutely rubbish recipe ended up with slimey cornflakes chocolate disintegrated do not make!
Luke
Hi Lesley, your the first person I have heard negatively from… We make these regularly for our children and never had a problem, in fact the hands in the photos are my daughters making it 😂. If the chocolate disintegrated I would think you overcooked it, it needs to be melted slowly on low heat, as written on the recipe? Once made they be sticky and gooey so you need to put them in the fridge to set, also stated on recipe card.
Rebecca
I wish I read this review before making them!
Mine turned out the exact same! 🙁
Kay
Hi Rebecca im sorry to hear this.
Could you please give us more of descriptions of what they have come out like please as we need to get to the bottom of this problem, to remedy this asap.
Did your chocolate go lumpy before the cornflakes went in the bowl? I'm wondering if the chocolate was burnt in the microwave?
Lesley said they were slimy? Is this before they are set in the fridge or after?
We are going to make them again this weekend with the kids (they will be happy!)so we will see if we can problem-solve then. But would be nice to hear back from you with more details.
Thank you 🙂
Cathy
