Is Jasmine Rice and Sticky Rice the same thing?
Jasmine Rice and glutinous (sticky) rice are 2 different types of rice.
Jasmine rice is mostly grown in Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam, it is naturally sticky when cooked. Although it is not as sticky as glutinous or sushi rice.
How do I make Jasmine Rice sticky?
The key to making your Jasmine sticky rice is NOT to wash it first! Other kinds of rice should have their starch rinsed before cooking.
However, Jasmine rice needs starch, which, when cooked, acts like glue to hold the rice grains together! Follow our recipe below or read on for more advice and serving/ storage suggestions.
📖 Step by Step Recipe

How much uncooked rice should be cooked to serve one person?
Half a cup (95g) of uncooked rice makes a whole cup of cooked rice (250g), which is enough for one person.
What pan should I use for cooking rice?
When cooking rice, you will need a simple lidded stainless steel saucepan. You do not need to use a non-stick pan.

Do I add cold or hot water to cook rice?
Always pour cold water into your rice and bring the water to a boil with the rice. This is part of the cooking process to perfect your rice.

Rice to Water ratio for jasmine rice?
Measure your rice & cold water using the below ratio.
It is especially important to follow the measurements, during cooking the water will completely soak into the rice. The chart below shows how much rice and water you will need.
| Serves | Jasmine Rice | Water |
| 2 people | 1 cup / 190g | 1 â…“ cup / 330ml |
| 4 people | 2 cups / 380g | 2 ¾ cup / 660ml |
| 6 people | 3 cups / 570g | 4 ¼ cup / 990ml |

What do you add to give flavour to Jasmine rice?
Jasmine rice is naturally very fragrant. For extra flavour, try adding a pinch of salt and star anise to give it a subtle sweetness. One star anise is fine, or add two for a stronger flavour.
Lemongrass is another popular flavour addition.
How do you cook sticky rice?
Using the above measurements, bring the water to the boil with rice, keeping the lid off. Once it has reached a boil, put a lid on and turn the heat to the lowest setting.
Put the timer on for 8 minutes. Do not feel tempted to open the lid during these 8 minutes, it will certainly ruin the result!!

After 8 minutes, turn the heat off. Allow another 5 minutes with the lid on to soak the remaining liquid.and remove the lid.
Remove the Star Anise and fluff up the Jasmine rice grains with a fork. You are ready to serve up!

What to serve Jasmine rice with?
Jasmine sticky rice tastes fabulous served with Thai, Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, and Japanese dishes.
We like to serve our Jasmine Sticky Rice in a dome shape.

A small bowl, glass, or even a teacup would work! Press the rice into the bowl; you don't need to press too hard. Remember, it is sticky anyway! Then turn the bowl upside down onto the plate/bowl you are serving it in!
Finally, add your curry around or to the side of your perfectly cooked Jasmine Rice! As seen below, served with our delicious Pressure Cooker Thai Beef Massaman.

Storage
Cooked rice requires proper storage to maintain its quality and prevent spoilage. Here are some tips for storing jasmine rice to ensure it stays fresh and delicious.
Fridge
The best way to store cooked jasmine rice is in an airtight container or sealed bag. To prevent bacteria growth, store it in the fridge within one hour of cooking.
Cooked rice can be stored in the refrigerator for up to three days.
Freezing
For longer storage periods, cooked rice can also be frozen. Freeze it in portion-sized packets or containers for easy thawing and reheating. When frozen properly, cooked rice can last up to one month without significant changes in texture or flavour. Thaw frozen rice in the refrigerator overnight before reheating, or use the defrost setting on your microwave if you're short on time.

Reheating
When ready to enjoy your pre-cooked rice, ensure it's reheated thoroughly until piping hot. Avoid reheating multiple times to prevent bacterial growth.

Do you remove the pan from the burner when you turn the burner off and let the rice rest or do you leave it on the burner during that time?
Delores says
Hi, looking at your ratio for your jasmine rice. I haven’t tried your ratio, but I can’t see how only 1/3 c of water to 1 cup of rice would be appropriate. My jasmine rice bag calls for 1 cup rice to 2 cups water and to rinse it. Did this and it turned out perfect. Can you explain. Are there different types of jasmine rices. I guess I could try your ratio, but I didn’t want to waste it.
Kay says
Thanks for the question Delores, I think you must have read it incorrectly? The water to rice ratio we use for 2 people is 1 + â…“ cup of water to 1 cup of jasmine rice?
The method on the rice bag is for more fluffy rice and probably requires draining of excess water afterwards?
Our method cooks 'sticky' jasmine rice in an absorption method, this means the rice grains will soak up all the water and you will have a glutinous, stickier texture and the rice will clump together, similar to the style of Thai rice.
I hope that helps answer your question.
We also have a recipe for plain basmati rice cooked in the absorption method, which results in fluffier rice if that's what you prefer.
Thanks, Kay

I made it a goal to get out of my standard white rice routine...I was doubtful of the 8 minute time for the Jasmine rice and am glad I read the comments after making it and not before. I followed your measurements exactly, started with cold water in the rice, brought it to a rolling boil, covered it and brought the burner down to low...perfect rice after 8 minutes! Thanks for the great instructions and recommended star anise!
Kay says
Hi Andrea, we love to hear these positive comments. Starting with cold water when cooking rice is key, it begins cooking before the 8-minute timer starts! We also have a simple basmati rice recipe and a Indian pilau rice you may find helpful?
We also made a Jamaican rice and pea last week, which I will be posting very soon!

Great results! My normal Jasmine rice calls for 1 cup rice and 1 1/2 cup water, so I was hesitant to try this new ratio. However, the 1 1/3 cup water worked perfectly! I didn’t have any anise so I used Chinese five-spice and garlic powder. Came out AMAZING!

Have been struggling with perfect rice for a while now. Always fancied doing sticky rice (my favourite)... thanks to your tutorial I produced my best ever today. Pretty much perfect. People mentioning it took longer than 8mins didn't apply to me. Maybe they forgot to factor in the bring it to boil time before counting down the 8mins? Anyway.. worked for me. Nothing fancy about my gas hob. Perhaps induction hobs are different. Either way.. Bye bye soggy disappointing rice. Thankyou so much!!!
Kay says
Hi Henry,
Thank you for your message, we are glad our recipe helped you achieve the best sticky Jasmine rice.
Like you said the time it takes to boil the water is an important part of cooking too, maybe some people are pouring in already boiled water??? Which will not begin the cooking process the same as boiling from cold water?
