How to make roast potatoes in an air fryer?
If you want to make roasties to cook in an air fryer, here's a quick slideshow showing you how!
Air fryer
Air fryers are all the rage; they help save time and cut down on oil for healthier cooking options.
The air frying process involves using hot air inside an airtight chamber to cook food. This super-hot air circulation helps create fried or roasted food with less oil.
This innovative appliance makes cooking healthy meals quick and easy with a fast cleanup.
There are many different brands of air fryers available. Ours is the Pro Breeze XL from Amazon.
Potatoes
To make crispy and fluffy roast potatoes, we use Maris Piper, King Edward or Desiree red potatoes.
They are all excellent varieties of potatoes that will give you the perfect result for air frying.
Peel and cut the potatoes into smaller pieces to help cook quicker.
Do I need to parboil potatoes before air frying?
I highly recommend parboiling first for a more tender, creamy texture inside the air fried, roasted potatoes.
The parboil process partially cooks the potato in boiling water before cooking in the air fryer.
To parboil potatoes for roasting, add chopped potatoes to a large pan of cold water and bring to a boil before timing for four minutes.
Drain well, rough up the edges by bashing against the sides of a metal colander.
If you do not want to parboil first, I suggest cutting the potatoes into smaller roasties to cook throughout quicker.
What oil for roast potatoes?
We like to use vegetable oil, olive oil or sunflower oil when cooking roast potatoes in the air fryer. You can use other oil varieties; just make sure that the smoke point is over 200Β°C /400Β°F.
If following a low-fat diet or slimming world, try frylight spray oil.
Place parboiled potatoes into a large bowl, pour over the oil and add some ground black pepper.
For extra flavour, you could also add onion granules, garlic powder /granules or dried herbs if desired.
How long to cook roast potatoes in the air fryer?
The time it takes to cook roast potatoes varies on the size and whether they have been parboiled.
The air-fried roasties seen in these pictures have been parboiled and took 25 minutes to cook in a preheated air fryer set to 200Β°C / 400Β°F.
We turned potatoes halfway through, to prevent sticking to the base and encourage even cooking.
The time varies between 20 minutes - 30 minutes.
When to add salt?
You may have noticed that we add salt and pepper to the potatoes after cooking; black pepper is ok to add during air frying.
But for the best crispy roasted potatoes, do not salt your potatoes until after cooking.
Make ahead
You can prepare the roast potatoes for air frying up to the parboiled stage with oil and seasoning added. But before they go into the air fryer basket.
Instead, cool at room temperature, then keep covered in the fridge for up to 3 days.
Alternatively, freeze spread out on a tray for a couple of hours before transferring into a freezer bag for up to 12 months.
How to cook frozen roast potatoes?
To cook frozen roast potatoes, simply place the frozen potatoes into the air fryer basket, no need for oil or seasonings as it has already been added.
To cook in the air fryer from frozen, preheat air fryer to 200 C / 400 F start with 15 minutes, give them a shake/turn over, then cook for an extra 5-15 minutes depending on how big the potatoes are and how crispy you like them!
